Feature Drama
(Italy – 108')
Directed by Milo Vallone
Anno Zero (Year Zero) is based on the play “Bariona ou le Fils du tonnerre” by Jean-Paul Sartre. The story takes place the day before the birth of Christ.
Bariona, the chief of a village situated a few miles from Bethlehem, oppressed by the Romans and burdened by continuous requests of taxes, asks the inhabitants of the village (including his pregnant wife) to stop having children.
Upon receiving news of the birth of the Messiah, the new king, Bariona decides to go to Bethlehem in order to kill him whilst the baby is still in swaddling clothes. However, first an encounter with an “angel”, then with one of the Three Wise Men and last but not least, the sight of the little Jesus prompts Bariona to completely change his point of view.
